PORTFOLIO
Cyro Coda is a 3D character crafted as the creative initiative of the RocketBrush Studio’s team. For this in-house project, our goal was to create a model, environment and sound design in Overwatch art style. Additionally, we aimed to highlight what makes this character unique — Cyro Coda is quick, playful and armed for action.
We designed Cyro Coda for our internal project — a creative initiative where our studio team developed a game-ready 3D character model from scratch, drawing inspiration from the vibrant art style of Overwatch. This involved detailing the character's personality and traits, creating concept art, 3D model and animations. The goal was to create an attractive and memorable character whose appearance and movements fully reflect her traits.
Meet the outcome of our efforts: Cyro Coda — the epitome of robotic charisma. She's a friendly robot, distinguished by her quickness, playful spirit and nimbleness. Her main strength lies in her exceptional mobility, and she wields a high-precision disc launcher as her weapon.
Let's delve into a detailed overview, including the meticulous processes and tools we employed to bring this character to life.
Our process started by drawing inspiration from popular games, focusing on Overwatch's compelling visuals. The goal was to understand what makes the characters in this game so appealing to fans.
Drawing on these insights, we crafted a 3D character with similar appeal. Moving from 2D sketches to a complete 3D model, our focus remained on capturing the essence that makes game characters enduring while distinguishing Cyro Coda with its unique attributes.
We used a standard full-cycle pipeline to create this character:
1. Highpoly and sculpt: The journey began with shaping 3D character model of Cyro Coda in ZBrush. In this stage, the character’s core visual identity was established, grounded in the detailed concept art created by the studio’s 2D artists, ensuring the model carried the distinctiveness required for a stylized yet realistic portrayal.
2. Retopology: Transitioning from the high poly sculpt, our team utilized both Maya and Blender for retopology. This critical phase refined the elaborate model into streamlined mesh, setting the foundation for 3D character modeling that balances detailed aesthetics with functional design.
3. UV mapping: Following retopology, UV mapping in Maya and Blender allowed for the precise application of textures, akin to fitting digital clothing onto our model. This step is essential for bringing 3D character to life with believable surface details and depth.
4. Texture map baking: With Marmoset Toolbag, the texture maps were baked, transferring details from high to low-poly model, imbuing the character with lifelike textures and shadows, critical for the 3D character animation that would follow.
5. Texturing: The texturing process was conducted in Substance Painter, where we brought out the nuances of Cyro Coda’s metallic body, giving them their final color and material properties. This ensured that this 3D character model would stand out with vividness and clarity.
6. Animations: The Studio’s animators stepped in to bring motion to the character, reflecting Cyro Coda’s playful antics.
For animation, we used Maya. Also, beyond the basics, we incorporated Plask — an AI-powered motion capture solution. We started by reviewing numerous acrobatic videos to find one that perfectly captured Cyro Coda's essence. When we finally did it, we stabilized this video to enhance AI's motion capture and uploaded it to Plask.
After analyzing the movement, the service generated a corresponding skeleton model. We saved this as an FBX animation file and integrated it with our character in Maya. Then, we incorporated this motion at the beginning of the animation and manually added the impactful strike Cyro Coda executes upon landing and how she transitions into an idle pose.
Ultimately, by integrating standard animation tools with third-party solutions, we successfully crafted animated 3D character. This blend of technologies brought Cyro Coda to life, with movements that authentically reflect her distinct personality.
By adhering to this structured pipeline, we at RocketBrush Studio have not only crafted 3D character model and animation with precision but also ensured its readiness for seamless integration into game engines. Our focus on technical optimization guarantees that the game-ready model is both performance-efficient and compatible with major platforms, streamlining the development process for creators. Cyro Coda is more than just model; she’s ready to engage players with her unique stories and vivid personalities.
1. Complexity in detailing: Our foremost challenge in developing 3D character model like Cyro Coda was achieving intricate detailing without compromising model efficiency. This required a fine-tuned balance between adding realistic textures and maintaining a viable model size for gaming platforms.
2. Animation realism: Crafting 3D character animations that accurately reflected the personality of Cyro Coda was a significant hurdle. Each movement and expression had to be realistic and fluid, requiring a deep understanding of animation principles to ensure her movements were natural and aligned with character traits.
3. Consistency in character design: Maintaining consistency in the character design throughout the development process was a challenge. As the character evolved from initial 2D sketches to full 3D model, maintaining visual identity was crucial, ensuring the final model remained true to the original concept art.
4. Sculpting and modeling accuracy: Achieving the right level of detail in the sculpting and modeling stages, particularly with ZBrush and Maya, was critical. This step required precise control over the digital sculpting tools to ensure that Cyro Coda’s features were accurately sculpted, reflecting the envisioned design.
Stylized 3D character models like Cyro Coda bring a distinctive charm and personality to various types of games. Their expressive designs go beyond realistic proportions, capturing the essence and mood of the character engagingly and timelessly. This stylized approach ensures that the character remains visually appealing and relevant, unaffected by the constant advancements in graphic technology.
In gaming narratives, stylized art offers immense versatility. Characters can seamlessly fit into various genres, from fantasy to more realistic settings, broadening their appeal and usability. This flexibility is a significant advantage in the diverse gaming industry, where stories and settings vary widely.
From a development standpoint, stylized 3D character models are often more cost-effective than hyper-realistic ones. They require fewer resources for detailing while still achieving a high level of aesthetic appeal. This cost-effectiveness makes them an attractive option, particularly when working within budget constraints.
The uniqueness of stylized characters gives games a distinctive visual identity. A game featuring well-designed, stylized characters can stand out in an industry often focused on achieving graphical realism. This uniqueness is not just a visual perk; it's a branding tool, helping games establish a distinct presence in a competitive market.
Moreover, stylized art's exaggerated features and expressive nature tend to resonate more with players. These designs often evoke stronger emotional connections, making the characters more memorable and relatable. This can lead to a more engaged and loyal player base, a crucial factor for the success of any game.
Overall, stylized 3D character art strikes a balance between artistic expressiveness, timelessness and practicality. It offers a unique approach to character design that's both aesthetically pleasing and advantageous for game development and player engagement.
