Check what other game developers say about working with RocketBrush Studio:
Fantasy games allow us to escape the sometimes harsh realities and become somebody else. Basically, just like all videogames, with the exception that fantasy usually focuses on creating a world that is totally different from the real one: dragons, magic, wizards and strength potions. Perhaps that’s why people like them so much – it’s a totally different realm.
We decided to dedicate a blog post to some of the best fantasy games of all time – to help you either choose a new adventure or remember an old one and make you give it another playthrough. Here’s a quick list to jump to a particular title.
Without further ado, let’s see what the best fantasy video games can be played and enjoyed if you’re in the mood for something like that or just want to see what we picked!
Genre: Alchemy Sim/Card Game | Developer: RocketBrush Games | Release date: 2025
Ways of Alchemy provides players with a unique world of medieval alchemy. It all comes with everything you think of when you hear the name of the game: a trusty cauldron, peasants working for coins, potion recipes, the Inquisition, an enigmatic monster slayer and inscrutable, mythical lands far away, full of treasures and foes. That’s what makes it one of the best fantasy card games.
It’s also not about potion brewing and farming only: there are adventures to go on, home errands to resolve, ancient wisdom to discover and… a philosopher’s stone to obtain. While it focuses primarily on alchemic role-playing, it does it with striking colors: there are not enough games that allow you to feel what it’s like to be a medieval alchemist, but Ways of Alchemy is definitely one of them. An absolute must if you’re into an alchemy setting and its attractive blend of real-life science and fantasy magic.

Not a very common choice for similar lists of best medieval fantasy games, but an absolute gem nevertheless, Gothic II is a cult classic that takes you to an immersive medieval fantasy realm. Set in the gritty coastal city called Khorinis and its dangerous surroundings, it is all about choices, their consequences and the slow, but rewarding, way to gain power. Notoriously, there’s no hand-holding, only you and a dangerous world filled with bandits, beasts and factions fighting for control.
Gothic II is not as popular as some other titles we are going to mention, but it stands pretty tall among the best fantasy games for its complex worldbuilding, dense and rich atmosphere and the freedom to do it all your way. It’s an absolute role-playing/fantasy lover's dream game, which is confirmed by its cult status, it still keeps more than twenty years later.

Genre: Turn-Based Strategy | Developer: New World Computing | Release Date: 1999
One of the best fantasy games, Heroes of Might and Magic III is a true gem, beloved by several generations of players. In HOMM3, you build kingdoms from scratch, recruit mighty armies and control legendary heroes – sounds pretty good for a fun fantasy game, right? Its iconic gameplay loop of exploration and conquest is still unmatched several decades later. There are numerous installments in the HOMM franchise, yet people still return to this one in particular.
And did we mention its vibrant, striking art, deep strategic elements to fiddle with and unforgettable music by Paul Romero? Clearly, HOMM3 is a defining entry in this list. And it’s also recently been re-released by Ubisoft, who brought it on Steam with lots of QoL changes, making it one of many best fantasy games on steam

Genre: CRPG | Developer: Larian Studios | Release Date: 2023
With Baldur’s Gate III, Larian Studios brought the legendary fantasy Dungeons & Dragons universe to life and made it with a certain modern flair. BG3 masterfully combines deep tactical combat, rich and fascinating story and world design to get lost in. True to the OG spirit of D&D, this game rewards creative approach, role-playing and exploration.
Its characters are so beloved by the audience that the fan art doesn’t stop to this day. In many ways, it’s not only a great successor to the original games released by Bioware and it’s not just one of the best fantasy medieval games for RPG fans – it’s an all-time great RPG, even though it’s a relatively new title.

Genre: Fantasy/RPG | Developer: BioWare | Release Date: 2009
Dragon Age: Origins is a story of traditional fantasy matters: it’s about war, betrayal and ancient evil. You must unite the fractured lands of Ferelden against the dangerous, antagonistic Darkspawn. With deep and engaging lore, fun tactical combat and plenty of tough, meaningful moral choices, DA: O in a way certainly defined a generation of dark fantasy RPGs.
Why is it called “Origins” though? It’s very simple: your origin story matters, and the fate of the world lies in your hands. Sometimes, that’s all that is required for a game to become one of the best fantasy medieval games.

Genre: Adventure | Developer: Nintendo | Release Date: 2017
A legendary (pun intended) series got a new breath (and again!) in 2017 and became fully open-world for the first time, in a certain ironic way coming back to the very first game released in 1986: Breath of the Wild redefined open-world exploration in moden fantasy just like its first installment did back in the day. It lets you explore Hyrulle’s vast landscapes any way you like — climb any mountain like a Spider-Man (a real inspiration behind this mechanic), glide across canyons and caves, cook wild ingredients and use different unique magic abilities to explore and discover all kinds of stuff.
It would be right to call BOTW a modern classic, because it literally is: a poetic, awe-inspiring tale filled with danger and discovery – truly one of the best fantasy games of all time.

Genre: Action RPG | Developer: FromSoftware | Release Date: 2011
It would be fair to call Dark Souls a trial by fire, like jumping through the fire to prove you’re a worthy warrior.
You probably know it all: an oppressive atmosphere, cryptic lore that can be discovered by following item descriptions and mysterious monologues and, of course, punishing difficulty that became a trademark. By being a unique, challenging fantasy game, it carved a permanent place in the pantheon of best fantasy video games, creating two additional installments in the series and becoming a huge influence on games in general.
Set in the decaying world of Lordran, every battle tests you and every corridor hides a mystery for you to discover. Dark Souls has lots of aspects that should not be spoiled, but you probably have already heard a lot of praise for it, and we can confirm it; it truly is one of the best fantasy RPGs.

Genre: Action RPG | Developer: Blizzard North | Release Date: 2000
Similar to Dark Souls, few games have shaped the fantasy and action RPG genre like the Diablo series – you can see its fingerprints all over the fantasy genre. The second installment is dark, fast-paced and endlessly addictive – it was so hard to put down back in the day and it’s still hard to do it nowadays, even though it’s a twenty-five-year-old game – wow! That’s one of the best fantasy video games for you!
Lots of crazy builds attached to a classic skill, fun PVP, gorgeous environments, soaking in dark atmosphere – that’s only some of the great aspects of the cult classic. Don’t let the age scare you – Diablo II still plays pretty well, especially if you play it via the Resurrected remaster.

Oblivion is a great entry for medieval fantasy and for many a game that started their interest in fantasy/RPGs. From the rolling hills of Cyrodiil to the hellish portals of Oblivion itself, an RPG classic like this (it turns twenty next year, oh yeah) offers freedom, interesting guild quests and one of the most vibrant open worlds of its time.
While Skyrim and Morrowind can also be considered great picks, we decided to highlight Oblivion in particular for a simple reason: recently, it has received a new update, bringing new graphics and additional tweaks to make one of the best fantasy games of all time comfortable to play in 2025.

Obviously, we couldn’t leave this one out: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a great achievement in RPG making and medieval fantasy storytelling. Step into the boots of Geralt of Rivia, a witcher and a monster slayer navigating kingdoms at war, fighting ancient curses and resolving grey-moral dilemmas.
What makes it one of the best fantasy RPGs of all time in simple words? It connects high fantasy concepts with gritty, cruel realism, changing quickly from from haunting, atmospheric fairy tales to political intrigues you can participate in..
