Slot games are blooming on browser platforms and mobile devices these days. Their main feature of some of these games is to simulate live slot machines from old school casinos. There’s also a difference in the requirements between old-school slot machines art and the art required for online slot games. An art usually consists of a certain number of slot machine icons (or symbols) that have specific value - from high to low. They are accompanied by the game UI screens, backgrounds, and sometimes characters bound by the common theme. At last, there are animations that might be ordered together or separately from the basic art. It's interesting that the physical slots that we've worked on, tend to require significantly more content compared to the online slots. However, it doesn't mean that the virtual slots are thin content-wise. The number of creative elements that the slot game can have might be even more vague, with additional layers of gameplay such as a story mode or a meta-gameplay that the player uncovers through moving up the game levels and milestones. So basically sky is the limit depending on how rich in content you'd like the game to be.
In online casinos, you’ll find differently-sized machines displaying distinct configurations. Generally, the artists consider the number of available combinations, bonuses, and symbols in the slot. It can be a standard configuration of 3x5 or 5x3 game field (or game reel for a reel-based slots) accompanied by the slots with distinct layouts such as 1x3, 3x3, 1x5, 4x5, 6x6, 2x4, etc. To make virtual slot machines more attractive, artists use golden details and colors to portray a premium look. The background scenery is also pretty suitable, with golden coins, buildings, objects, or stashes of money scattered around the image. As aforementioned, the slot must have enticing animations to provide the player with stimulus, especially when there’s a big win.
In general, virtual slot machines have five types of symbols. Each symbol contains a specific feature and importance within the game; their art style should reflect the slot’s theme. For instance, an Egyptian-themed machine should have characters and drawings deriving from the Egypt mythology. The most famous symbols which often appear in stereotypical depictions of casinos are the number seven, bells, cherries, etc. Now, let’s briefly understand the five types of symbols in slot games.
These symbols, when hitting combinations, will provide a small win for the player. They’re more frequent to combine but have less value.
When hitting combinations, these symbols provide a higher reward. However, they’re more infrequent to combine; players rarely earn those.
They’re a different kind of symbol that can combine and provide some extra rewards. For instance, some can give the player bonus multipliers, allow the player multiple spins, etc.
When appearing individually or combined, these symbols will provide the player with rare bonuses. When getting a special symbol, players might receive a bonus play, gratuity over the round, winning chance multipliers, etc.
These symbols can provide the player with rewards without entering any horizontal or vertical combination. Hence, the name “scatter;” multiple such symbols can appear anywhere on the screen, and the player will receive a specific prize.
It all depends on the scope and the complexity of the art style you're aiming for. As a game art studio, we used to deal with creating the art and animation for slots rather than the full-cycle slot game development. So talking about slot machine graphic design, the usual rule applies – game art can be pretty budget-friendly given that you're aiming for something simplistic, but it can turn out to be quite expensive if the art style required extensive polishing and a high level of detail. Eventually, it's better to benchmark the requirements against some of the targeted games and see if we can find a middle ground between the available budget and the level of quality. If anything, it's better to go for the stylized art without characters and complex animations rather than trying to pinpoint the photorealistic style with full-height slot machine character animation. However, as you can see above, we can provide both and be pretty flexible depending on our partners' requirements.
