What is an autumn game? Perhaps, to answer this question, we need to answer another: what makes autumn look so unique? It’s probably the beautiful match of earthy colors, accompanying each other naturally, your personal experiences attached to the autumnal atmosphere and the way it compliments the overall tone of the game. As you will see, the art direction is immensely crucial in creating an unforgettable atmosphere in all these cases. Those that succeed at that can definitely be considered an “autumn game”
We decided to remember what autumn games have struck us as truly memorable and picturesque and created a short list of some of our favorites. It’s not necessarily games about autumn, but some of the levels or places in these games stand out and look unique with their autumnal feel.
Let’s take a look at ten autumn levels and remember what makes them so unique and special.
One of the Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze’s levels takes place in a gorgeous place called Autumn Height, which lives up to its name: inspired by autumns in Switzerland villages, there are lots of orange leaves falling, providing you with a platform to use to avoid pits. Beer mugs provide you with bonuses (reminiscing Oktoberfest), and windmills with platforms to avoid pits swirling, powered by cold autumnal air. Not only do these elements work well on both gameplay and visual levels, this place feels like a living, breathing area worth traveling to, and it won’t be forgotten in a while after finishing the game.
The Witness, a puzzle game, allows you to traverse the big island full of different biomes, each one has a specific theme and aesthetic. Shady Trees is a gorgeous autumn forest, requiring you to use environmental clues: shadows, tree trunks, sticks and branches as extensions of puzzles you’re about to solve. Once again, an incredibly well-made collaboration of a thematic idea with the gameplay element of the game, and a great addition to autumn video games.
GTA IV takes place in Liberty City, a New York-inspired location, during the autumn season. While some of its nooks and crannies look like a typical megapolis, crowded and vibrant, there are some glimpses of a quiet and wistful autumn atmosphere, immersing you in itself. If you ever lived in a big city, you know how different the vibe can get during different seasons. Rockstar’s designers and environmental artists understood it too, creating a truly memorable city in an autumn game for you to explore.
Minecraft has all kinds of seasons going, and while some people love building their houses and bases in wintry biomes or under the ground to avoid enemies, the autumnal biome is an absolute eye-candy for those of us who cherish autumn and all its little things. Exploring it together with friends can also be very fun, like going on a trip in a real-life forest. We need more autumn online games for when it’s too cloudy and rainy!
A game inspired by Twin Peaks takes place in a similar small town located in a place surrounded by forests and mountains, creating a tremendous feeling of belonging to a small, cozy society and representing one of the most realistic autumns in video games. You can almost feel the cold October air as you traverse its forests, following the plot. But don’t relax, it’s a survival horror game after all.
A bittersweet indie game about the pains of growing up has been praised for its autumnal look and captivating narrative. It’s difficult not to fall in love with the way this game looks, yellow trees flying around the city roofs you traverse, early orange sunsets in the background and the overcast tone of the story will be the perfect experience for those who are craving some fall video games.
This critically acclaimed action-adventure is set in thirteen-century Japan on an island called – you guessed it – Tsushima during the autumn, and has a lot of gorgeous-looking nature setpieces. A special boss battle is called Duel Under Autumn Leaves and it is exactly what it says on the tin. Falling leaves, swinging swords and the feeling of zen-like concentration go pretty well together. It’s a unique game of this list that combines a delicate Japanese touch with the vivid colors of autumn and its brisk winds.
Although Skyrim is a wintry game in many people’s minds, there’s a region that has a mild climate and makes it feel like an autumn game – it’s The Rift, located on the south-eastern region of the map. It truly is a remarkable-looking place, full of beautiful otherworldly birches with Indian Summer touches all over them, making it an outstanding part of a great game.
Just like Skyrim, Breath Of The Wild is full of different types of vibes. Akalla Village is responsible for the autumnal feeling. Walking around it and searching for dungeons always puts players in this mood. What makes it so memorable is the immersive aspect of Breath of the Wild. It’s a place where you want to buy a house, wake up every morning and go for a walk to pick some mushrooms, taking stools through the beautiful forests of the area. If you are familiar with the Zelda series, there is a big chance this particular title is your answer to the question “What is the best autumn game?”
A short but sweet indie game with a unique retro aesthetic and one of the most charming autumns in videogames shows you that it’s not only the graphics, it’s the style and the intricate touch you can put to a game to make it truly shine visually, thanks to its handcrafted look inspired by Canadian autumns.
We hope you enjoyed our little top-10 autumn games list that has some of the most gorgeous levels from videogames. As you can see, they all seem so hypnotic that you can’t help but want to experience them, as if it’s a real trip to the real place – thanks to the wonderful synergic work of environmental artists and designers.
Beautiful art style means a lot if you want to create a colorful, striking collection of memories for your players to explore. This is why it is incredibly important to make sure the art direction is going to be stellar. Yet, achieving the same level of quality across all aspects of game development on your own can be quite a challenge.
Luckily, an art outsourcing comes to save the day! By joining your forces, game art outsourcing studios can create a special look for your game, while you can concentrate on other important elements such as game development, level and sound design, and so on.
At RocketBrush Studio, we have been working since 2016, becoming experts not only in different aspects of outsourcing, be it art, both 2D and 3D, animation, production of videogames or even sound design, but also in different styles and genres, from survival zombie games, from casual puzzle games to pixelated action-RPG rogue-lites.
